The Rural Community Retail Project is a LEADER Partnership Initiative.

The Project will initially focus on:

  • Influencing the politicians, public servants and media that shape public policy to support the Community Shop concept with funding, regulation and informed exposure.

The LEADER Partnership Companies will be looking closely at the Plunkett Foundation’s very successful approach to developing and supporting community shops in the UK.

The Plunkett Foundation has been helping rural communities through co-operatives and community-ownership to take control of the issues affecting them since 1919.

They focus on:

  • Helping predominantly rural communities to set up and run community-owned shops, co-operative pubs and community food enterprises
  • Supporting rural communities to establish a wide range of other co-operatives and community-owned enterprises
  • Advocating and raising awareness amongst policy makers, support organisations and rural communities themselves of the ability of rural communities to take control through co-operation and community-ownership of the issues affecting them
  • Championing and connecting rural co-operatives internationally.

Loughmore Community Shop & Tearooms Co-Operative is a charming community spot and was the first of it’s kind in Ireland.  This  facility has enhanced the lives of everyone in the community, offering a warm and welcoming place to come to enjoy our tearooms, purchase groceries, newspapers and locally produced foodstuffs from their shop or items from their Art Gallery and Craft selection.

Crosspatrick Community Store

Crosspatrick

Crosspatrick, Co Kilkenny

In Jan 2010, Crosspatrick’s only community shop closed with little notice.  This spurred ambitious and dedicated locals to raise money and form one of Kilkenny’s first community shops which is run completely by volunteers of all ages from the community.  Any proceeds go back into community enhancement such as supporting the painting of the school and community hall.  As one local lady stated, “All roads were leading out instead of in.  Crosspatrick has come together to offer a service for its own community to keep business local, provide community convenience and keep our community together.”
